The company is jointly managed by two Directors each allocated dedicated areas of responsibility and each Director highly qualified and experienced for their respective areas:

1.1      Chris Vermaak – Managing Director:

22 Years’ experience in High Power Convertor sales, design and commissioning and Transformer Specification, Sales, Design, Construction and Commissioning. Also Divisional Manager in this field responsible for budgets exceeding R200mio per year.

Last 14 Years’ experience as Managing Director, Design Engineer for Radian Transformers in the field of Special Transformers

1.2      Nelson Jeronimo – Operations Director:

21 Years’ experience working during this period at three major transformer manufacturers in Design, Manufacture, Fabrication, Coil Winding, Assembly and testing of transformers up to 132kV 40MVA.

2       Resources

2.1      Factory

We estimate our factory throughput at approx. 15 transformers of sizes up to 40MVA per year. Transformers up to 40MVA in the distribution market could be manufactured or repaired.

2.2      Engineering

We are very proud of our total engineering capability.

Our mechanical engineering and design is done in the Solidworks environment enabling ourselves and our clients to visualise the final products in a 3D view thus optimising and ensuring no problems in either manufacture or final installation on site.

We also have Solidworks Simulation Finite Element Analysis for structural and mechanical design checks.

We are one of only two companies in South Africa who owns and applies Ansys EMAG Maxwell software for verification of our designs. We can utilise the full Ansys portfolio and induced heat and hot spots can be evaluated and minimised using the Ansys Mechanical and Structural packages

2.3      Winding Shop

We are able to and have done coil windings in both helical and disc format up to 1.2 meter diameter and 1.8 meter height.

Our winding personnel have combined winding experience of 40 years total.

We have wound, installed and successfully commissioned “Pan Cake” windings for the rewind of two 20MVA Shell Type transformers.

2.4      Fabrication

We outsource the manufacture our transformer tanks but critical parts like flanges and core clamps are manufactured in house according our drawings and consist of CNC machined or laser cut materials welded and inspected by ourselves. Here we have state of the art welding machines for MIG and TIG welding.

We have a full CNC machining centre and lathe for own fabrication drilling, milling and tapping of all steel and copper special parts ensuring absolute accurate fitting of parts.

3       Quality Assurance

We work according ISO9001 procedures and protocol. Careful records are kept of every stage of manufacture and our documentation is of the highest quality in this regard.

We are working towards obtaining ISO certification.

4       Product Range

4.1      Special Transformers

Due to our unique and very strong engineering capability we are rather focussed on the more special convertor transformers requiring our higher engineering and design skills.

We would be most efficient in terms of our manufacturing capacity in the range of 1MVA up to 30MVA single transformers or up to 2 off 30MVA active parts in common tank rectifier transformers as required for larger 12 pulse rectifier plants.

We also offer transformers with On Load Tapchangers and Saturable Reactors for large diode rectifiers.

We have completed a Special Distribution transformer for Transnet where we received the order despite not having BEE certification purely on the basis of our capability to design and fabricate such a special solution.

4.2      Distribution Transformers

This segment of the industry is rather focussed on large quantities of similar transformers and the designs of these are not as complex as special transformers. At this time we are not focussing on this segment but have built a number of these units where our rectifier transformer clients was so impressed by quality delivered that they insisted we build them also their smaller distribution units.

In this range we could offer units with/without Tapchangers up to 40MVA and we should be competitive starting at 200 kVA upwards. Due to test bay limitations we can build and test to maximum 70kV input voltage.

5       References

Some of our special transformers manufactured and tested successfully at this time includes 6 off 10MVA rectifier transformers with 15º phase shifts enabling our client to get 12 pulse rectifier reaction from 2 identical units purely by reversing the phase rotation.

Also we have completed two off Double Star with Interphase Transformer units rated at 19MVA each complete with 21 position On Load Tapchangers and Saturable Reactors.

We have developed a unique design for the Interphase Transformers to reduce noise whilst having uncommonly high voltages across the Interphase Transformers We have recently refined wound interphase transformers which provide better magnetic coupling and reduced noise. This will be implemented in all IPT solutions from 40Vdc upwards

We have repaired a number of special transformers including 2 off 20MVA 3 phase Shell Type transformers which entailed complete rewind of all windings and service of online tap changers

Our most recent success is the design and manufacture of one of 12 pulse convertor transformer including Interphase Transformers and 3^rd Interphase Transformer rated DC current of the transformer 97kA at 88Vdc

6       Repair and Refurbishment

We have done a number of rewind and repairs in our field of expertize and those included shell type transformers rating up to 28MVA.

One of the projects we have done in our factory is the rewind of 4 off 24 MVA rectifier transformers for Namzinc in Namibia. Of course the rewind includes always analysis of the units and then improvement in design output and performance always aiming to reduce losses and provide client with a product better than the original new units.
